How To Create the Perfect Rustic-Looking HDB Design in Singapore

How To Create the Perfect Rustic Looking HDB Design in Singapore

Wood elements and the color white in the interiors brings in a look that’s classic, bright and airy. The wood is the star of the show in this interior design scheme as it brings in natural or organic elements. There’s also a certain warmth coming from the textures and the patterns of the wood grain. When you set that against a white backdrop, you end up with an aesthetic that’s rustic but at some point, still delightfully modern.

In this HDB BTO design project in Bedok South Road by AC Vision, our experienced interior designers were able to create just that and so much more. The look is clean and minimalist but it also has splashes of color and character because of the different types of wood elements that were brought in along with the space. Here are a few tips for you to be able to recreate the look.

Use white subway tiles as a kitchen backsplash

A great way to showcase a minimalist look and feel to the space would be to introduce white subway tiles as a kitchen backsplash. White is great because it pairs well with wood elements. Organic design elements such as wood help warm the space up where the white can at times make it seem clinical and cold. A majority of subway tiles have a glossed over and glassy textures that makes them perfect as backsplashes because kitchen dirt and grime will be able to just slide right off. This makes its maintenance hassle free and extremely easy. It usually doesn’t need anything more than just a soft rag and some soapy water to get the job done. You’ll be able to clean the surfaces up in no time at all.

Pictured in this Bedok South Road HDB flat designed by AC Vision, we’ve incorporated subway tiles along one side of the kitchen wall. To elevate the look further and bring the rustic look home, we paired them with wooden countertops and retro-looking kitchen appliances. The black hardware fixtures on the sink provide a little more contrast to the design, breaking up the space so that it doesn’t look monotonous.

Go with soft, muted brown colors for the bedroom

The key to a great bedroom is something that’s great for inducing relaxation and restful sleep after a long, hard day in the city. In this AC VisionHDB flat we’ve redesigned in Bedok South Road, we turned it up a notch by having variating muted brown colors in the bedroom’s cabinets, side tables, and even sheet covers. It’s all about cohesiveness and bringing everything together. The white walls provided a nice and blank canvas that allowed the rest of the wood and wood-like elements in the bedroom to really shine through.

Another tip for bedroom design is to invest on high quality dim lighting for the nightlights. Mood setting is everything in the bedroom and if you want to achieve that, you can do it well my mimicking this vintage-looking nightlight just slightly a little above bedside table.

Play around with the wood elements and textures

Pictured in this HDB flat’s living room designed by AC Vision, we let the wooden divider/cabinetry to be the focal point of the space. The inner crevices of the cabinet doors were designed with wicker material while the rest were made out of solid wood. The vertical grain pattern made the cabinetry appear taller, further elevating the ceiling height. This has done wonders for the overall effect on the space given that the cabinet spans from floor to ceiling.

Also, don’t be afraid to marry the old with the new. We incorporated a nice flat screen, which in our opinion fits right in with the design of the room, despite the overall rustic and somewhat minimalist aesthetic. It’s something that you can play around with, too. A key element here is that less is always more. Go sparingly with the design pieces that you want to incorporate and focus more on the big pieces that will really bring the cohesiveness of the design together.
